Pea Soup

Trish and I started a new blog for the folks at BLT named Primordial Soop. It's really cool, everyone should go check it out and participate in its bi-weekly sculptathons.

omg crunched

I got crunched the past few months, so I've been definitely AWOL from doing free-time stuffs. BUT I plan on making that particular habit end in the near future :D How's everyone doing, having a good day so far? I know I am.

Here's Beastman's face, from He-Man. Never finished it to the degree that I wanted to, because it was for a weekly challenge here at work, and I got caught up on other things on the friday I wanted to finish it on.

I'll post more stuff later this week, since I'm NOT CRUNCHING ANYMORE!!!!!!

Yaaawn

Haven't been able to update this in a while. I'm pretty tired right now, but that's not what this post's gonna be about...

Didn't finish Dominance War this year, which sucks. I blame a slow concepting phase, how I couldn't find a subject that made me really happy, and ended up free modeling, which is a lot slower. Next year, if I finalize an idea faster, and start modeling to the concept, I should be able to get further. This is how far I made it in the amount of time provided. I still wanna finish the character, but I need some time before that.

I donno the next contest I'm going to enter, we'll see. But I really want to enter another one soon, I hope someone puts one up.

Dominance War Update!

So I've been working on the dominance war a lot these past few days. Lots of concepting and such, but none of the concepts really called out to me for this contest. After about a week of fruitlessly drawing, I thought that I wanted to do a frog thief, so I rolled with that. Right now, the plan is for him to have a long, dynamic, bestudded tongue, be dressed in leather and such, and use a water cloak to hide himself IN THE SHADOWS. So that's what I'm doing. After doing some shitty concepts for it that looked like Rennesance Kermit the Frog, I decided to take a different path, make him more quasimodo. Since then, I made a basic anatomy study with zbrush and the clay brush, which I'm ACTUALLY WILLING TO SHOW.

The back still needs some work, as far as where the legs meet up with the torso, but I like his anatomy because its full of contrast. His legs are huge/waist is small/arms are huge/but not them all. That's my poem, btw.

Now I'm retopologizing, which is awesome but somehow boring at the same time. Looks like this.

And that's where we are now. I'm sculpting his mouth so that I can open it, put in a huge tongue with a few studs in.

Dominance War Started

Well, the Dominance War started off to a bumpy start on Saturday night, and I've been busy when at home. Here's the thumbs I made last night. I'm planning on having a few more days of thumbnails, honing down to one idea, then develop that idea into a *gasp* full concept

No seriously, not dead

No, seriously, I'm still here. I'm sketching in my sketchbook, stuff that is wretched and terrifying. Trying to get ready for the Dominance War, where I'll have to concept or something. I have already broken my new year's resolution to model one model every month, but the sketchbook one is still going strong :D I'll just have to model more.

Openned up Modo again, and remembered why I love it so. Might have to work with that at work.

Uhhh, other than that, I'm thinking about another project which is awesomely awesome and involves my free time.

Ohkay, I'll update again soon!!

Not Dead

I was sick Thursday until today (Sunday), which really put a damper on my whole "don't be sick" plan for this weekend.

I'm planning on participating in the Dominance War when the details are released later on. It should be a lot of fun, and hopefully the scheduling and hard work will pay off. We'll see!! :)

Anyway, back to work.

Sketchbook officially started

That's right. I've officially started the sketchbook that I shall finish this year. It seems so far off, and the sketchbook is only 100 pages, so I might actually accomplish this goal. Trish says "It's really easy to finish a sketchbook, you pansy." I disagree, for whenever I try to fill up a sketchbook, I stop about 1/3 of the way through, for one of many reasons.
  1. I buy a really pretty sketchbook and I say "I can't fill up this beautiful things with my chickenscratch."
  2. I stop drawing 'cause motivation drops
  3. or work starts up
  4. or I hear those fateful lines "3d people don't need to draw" (LIES DAMMIT, I DO TOO NEED TO DRAW AND KNOW ANATOMICALS!)
But not this time, dammit. I'm going to finish it. I bought a decently sized, notexpensive, not flashy sketchbook, and I've started drawing again.

Unfortunately, I'm not showing you folks any of this sketchbook for a while. But I do ask for links to artists you find inspirational! I need to see the work of others, to figure out what I like about them and learn. So gimme what you got!

In 3d, I'm f'n around with zspheres and seeing about modeling in-zbrush. Fun :D

Vacation days are gone

I'm sad that my vacation is at an end, but look on the bright side, it means lotsa updates! Some quick notes and new year's resolutions!
  • The girl mesh, I think, is irriversibly fucked. It's run aground on a zbrush bug, where it doesn't properly mirror from one side to another, instead, it leaves crazy cracks and creases on the mesh. Its one thing I've run into before, and according to forum bitchings, there's no real way to fix it... It really sucks, but I think it's alright. It was really good practice, and that just means I'll have to do it again, which I'm alright with. I might tinker with it some more, to find a very obscure and crazy way of fixing it, but right now, no dice. Its one of those problems that the only solution I can think of is more annoying than just sucking it up and resculpting. Besides, it was great practice, lord knows I could use more of that.
  • Resolution time! I resolve to sculpt 12 characters/meshes this year, one for every month!
  • Resolution Dos! Resolving to fill a freaking sketchbook! IT SHOULDN'T BE THIS HARD.
See, if I do it right, I'll be concepting and drawing in the sketchbook, while modeling the last month's idea in zbrush. IT'S BRILLIANT, HOW CAN IT FAIL?! Oh yeah, laziness. I've seen 3d people who can draw though, so it DOES exist, and I want to get to that level. You know, have some useful Real Life artistic skills. That'd be super.

Tonight I plan on getting to work on some awesome sculpting. Who wants to take bets I'm going to be playing Viva Pinata or Bioshock, or rockin' out with my homeslice Strobel in our f'n awesome Rock Band KILLASAURUS HORSE?
